When you wake and hear that there has been another shooting……my heart breaks. Another

black man has been killed. A life has been extinguished, before he has finished his purpose on

this earth. My heart breaks for this mother and father. As a mother of three black sons, I

wanted to pick up the phone and tell them to make sure that everything in their car is in

working order for they won’t get stop. I had to stop myself. They grew up all their life with

their dad telling them, every time they went out the house if you get pulled over, do exactly

what the police tell you to do. Don’t where your hoodie in the car, don’t play the music loud in

the car, drive the speed limit, don’t give them a reason to pull you over. It is exhausting that as

a black parent that we have to tell are black sons these instructions when they go out of our

presence. You start praying that they make it back home safely. My sons were law abiding,

good students, good athletes, but you still had to give them these instructions. They were born

a black male and America has not accepted that their life matters.

Being pulled over is real to our family. I was pulled over and asked why, because we thought

you looked like a robbery suspect. In the car with the whole family, police flashing the light in

your car and follow you a quarter mile and then pull you over with no reason. Your son is

running in his neighborhood and a police officer stops him and question why he has change in

his pocket. Lucky (NO, God had him covered), I happen to drive by. Called my son and the

police offer was questioning why he had his change in a metal container. So now he has to

carry his money in a container that is acceptable to a police offer, otherwise you are suspected

of some wrong doing? My husband driving home and pull into our driveway and the police

follow him into the drive way and tell him to stay in his car. They had no exclamation why they

were following him. He stated I am at my home. They stilled harassed him.

When you continue to have these experiences with police officers, how are you supposed to

feel about them? Yet, you know that you are living in the United States of America that still has

race problems. That everyone does not believe the second paragraph in the Declaration of

Independence that states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are

created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,

that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” All these years later,

certain individuals do not believe that everyone has these certain unalienable

rights……. particular black males.

So every day, I continue to work for Social Justice, for equality for everyone! That I will

continue to love everyone, no matter their choices in life. That I will continue to be a

facilitator for The Institute of Healing Racism. That I will work every day to insure that

my grandsons, will live in a world one day that they will be able to have ‘certain

unalienable Rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness’.
